Synopsis

Product Description
Throughout his illustrious career Jimmy Giuffre remained a true innovator. From creating the timeless Four Brothers Sound with Woody Herman to his many acoustic trios which both anticipated and influenced the ECM genre, multi-saxist Giuffre has always been a genuine frontrunner. 'Swamp People comprises the most adventurous juncture in Giuffre s constant search for a new approach to familiar themes. Indeed, of all the groups Jimmy Giuffre fronted, this was, by far, the most unique in that it featured Giuffre on saxes and clarinet, Bob Brookmeyer s signature sounding valve trombone and guitarist Jim Hall. And, it was this swinging threesome that famously performed the evocative jazz hit The Train And The River in the movie Jazz On A Summer s Day and is included here. It was The Train And The River that set the tone for what Giuffre described as the trio s seductive blend of 'blues-based folk jazz.' Be it Giuffre originals such as Swamp People and The Green Country (New England Mood) or idiosyncratic reworkings of Show Me The Way To Go Home and California Here I Come , no other group before or since has come close to emulating this threesome.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"At the time this recording was made, Jimmy Giuffre was at the top of his game. He was a talented reed player (mostly clarinet) with his own unusual style, and an extraordinarily gifted composer and arranger. Here he appears with two other musicians with whom he traveled in the Fifties, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone and Jim Hall on guitar. An improbable combination to be sure. No piano, no bass, no drums; just three able musicians interacting in an almost magical way.

The CD is a mixture of Giuffre originals and standards. The standards are almost as good as the originals. (Any group that can turn "California, Here I Come" and "Show Me a Way to Go Home" into rousing jazz performances has a claim to fame.)

At the risk of gushing: this CD is on my list of CD's-you-could-bring-with-you-if-you-were-stuck-on-a-desert-island-and-could-only-bring-five.
