"Jimmy King's new disk "Live At Monterey" is in my heavy rotation at present. It is a part live (hence the title)and part studio disk. King was born Manuel Gales and served as Albert King's rhythm guitarist during the late eighties. Albert King became his mentor and after leaving Albert's band he adopted the King name. The disk serves as sort of a tribute to his mentor with no less than 6 of the 11 cuts associated with Albert King. Jimmy King has stated that his biggest influences are Albert King and Jimi Hendrix. This cd gives an illustration of that. The first cut "The Ghetto" contains wah-wah drenched guitar from the Hendrix trick bag while cuts such as the slow blues "Drowning On Dry Land" contain the string bending attack favored by Albert King. It is worth noting that Albert and Jimmy King both play Gibson Flying V guitars and are/were left handed (as was Hendrix). This makes the similarity between their styles even more evident. The Memphis soul/blues vibe is even stronger on the last four studio cuts in which King's band is augmented by Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns. Another aspect of the Memphis connection is that King is from Memphis and also chooses to cover "Living In The Danger Zone" and "It Ain't The Same No More" both written by Willie Mitchell of Memphis Hi Records fame. This Memphis soul/blues vibe reminds me of the Stax sides that Albert King cut in Memphis. "Wrapped Up In Love Again" and "Floodin' In California" are among the many highlights. Along with Son Seals, King appears to be the best of Albert King's many admirers. His mixture of blues, soul and rock should make him a rising star with possible crossover appeal. If you are an Albert King disciple (like myself) or enjoy contemporary blues do yourself a favor and pick this up immediately!"

live tracks jammed packed with fire and fury, his passion for guitar playing is the key to his
drawing power. Just take a listen to ~ "LIVING IN THE DANGER ZONE", from his "Soldier for the Blues"
album, only this time we here it live, and this is down-with-it blues pure and simple...my
favorite is "WRAPPED UP IN LOVE AGAIN", a studio set that is "on track" for the fans
