Synopsis
Amazon.com Memphis's Jimmy King had to drop the "little" he used to carry before his name, because this scalding 1999 concert--fired by his eloquent guitar and soul-dipped voice--proves he's become a big talent. Live tracks are supplemented by four high-energy studio cuts from 1994 with the Memphis Horns cranking up the greasy-funk factor. But the real excitement here is in the live tunes, especially a stone-chiseled "Drowning on Dry Land," on which Jimmy chokes and bends the fat, soaring notes of his Gibson Flying V in raw homage to his late mentor, Albert King. Jimmy's even learned to sing a little like Albert, taking his time and finishing every slow phrase with the same kind of hang-in-the-air vibrato he applies to his bold six-stringing. Instrumental opener "The Ghetto" benefits from Jimmy's heavy wah-wah attack, and young King keeps his guitar tone loud and roaring even when he's handling dance-beat workouts from the pen of his hometown hero, Willie Mitchell. King smoothes things out a bit for the prickly solo in "It Ain't the Same No Mo" that ends the concert with a flourish, wedding Santana's Latin inflections with Stevie Ray Vaughan's arching tone. But for the most part, it's plain that King likes to play rough. --Ted Drozdowski |
CD ReviewsGREAT LAST CD FROM A KILLER GUITARIST! Anthony S. Smith | Hyattsville, Maryland USA | 10/03/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "THIS WAS A VERY GOOD CD FOR A GREAT ARTIST...JUST [STINKS] THAT HE HAD TO DIE SO YOUNG OF A HEART ATTACK AT ONLY 37......MAKE SURE YOU GET THE GALES BROTHERS CD WITH HIM AND HIS BRO'S ON IT IT BLOW THIS ONE OUT THE WATER!" Memphis Soul/Blues Guitar J. E FELL | Carterville, Illinois United States | 05/23/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "Jimmy King's new disk "Live At Monterey" is in my heavy rotation at present. It is a part live (hence the title)and part studio disk. King was born Manuel Gales and served as Albert King's rhythm guitarist during the late eighties. Albert King became his mentor and after leaving Albert's band he adopted the King name. The disk serves as sort of a tribute to his mentor with no less than 6 of the 11 cuts associated with Albert King. Jimmy King has stated that his biggest influences are Albert King and Jimi Hendrix. This cd gives an illustration of that. The first cut "The Ghetto" contains wah-wah drenched guitar from the Hendrix trick bag while cuts such as the slow blues "Drowning On Dry Land" contain the string bending attack favored by Albert King. It is worth noting that Albert and Jimmy King both play Gibson Flying V guitars and are/were left handed (as was Hendrix). This makes the similarity between their styles even more evident. The Memphis soul/blues vibe is even stronger on the last four studio cuts in which King's band is augmented by Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns. Another aspect of the Memphis connection is that King is from Memphis and also chooses to cover "Living In The Danger Zone" and "It Ain't The Same No More" both written by Willie Mitchell of Memphis Hi Records fame. This Memphis soul/blues vibe reminds me of the Stax sides that Albert King cut in Memphis. "Wrapped Up In Love Again" and "Floodin' In California" are among the many highlights. Along with Son Seals, King appears to be the best of Albert King's many admirers. His mixture of blues, soul and rock should make him a rising star with possible crossover appeal. If you are an Albert King disciple (like myself) or enjoy contemporary blues do yourself a favor and pick this up immediately!" "listen as Jimmy pays homage to his idol Albert King" J. Lovins | Missouri-USA | 03/28/2002 (4 out of 5 stars) "How about some down home blues...this is the way we think of this artist/musician/composer
JIMMY KING, who just so happens to be "LIVE AT MONTEREY", recorded at the Monterey Bay Blues Festival, Patee Arena, Monterey, California on June 27, 1999...seven live tracks jammed packed with fire and fury, his passion for guitar playing is the key to his drawing power. Just take a listen to ~ "LIVING IN THE DANGER ZONE", from his "Soldier for the Blues" album, only this time we here it live, and this is down-with-it blues pure and simple...my favorite is "WRAPPED UP IN LOVE AGAIN", a studio set that is "on track" for the fans and the purist sound this side Beale Street Today, deep blue blues, and you gotta love it.
