CD Reviews

What a cover band!!

"Count Basie must have been proud when this album came out in 1966. Not only does the band sound like the real thing, but throw in the driving sound of Jimmy McGriff's swinging Hammond B3 organ, and now we have something. Jimmy just hammers away, going through the Basie songbook like a hurricane in heat. Songs like,"Everyday I Have the Blues", "Blues Go Away", "Slow But Sure", never sounded so fresh. Basie must have taken notice in this solid effort. Anyone who loves the Basie style of that jump blues, in your face sound that the Basie band delivered, and the outstanding playing of Jimmy McGriff and his Hammond B3 organ just can't miss on this cd. Grab this one! It will be a great addition to your collection."
Smashing power...

"This is one of my mega-favorites ! The most burning organ sound of Jimmy McGriff + a top Big Band (more or less what was to become the Thad Jones Mel Lewis Orchestra) with Mel himself or Grady Tate on drums. The charts or mostly Wilkins or Hefti's of the mid fifties, which are literally shouted by this explosive setup. I just recently "upgraded" my completely worn-out LP with the CD version. One regret and critic: there is an impossible edit on "Blues Go Away" on the CD version ! But anyway, if you like famous arrangements powered up by a lot of vitamines... GO FOR IT"
