Good playing, poor sound quality

"Jimmy Raney is one of the greats of jazz guitar with feet firmly planted in the Charlie Christian be-bopping horn-like school. From a certain perspective, almost anything he played is worth hearing at least once, and that's the perspective you need to adopt with this 2-cd set. Sounding wobbly and distorted, as if it were recorded on a hand-held Realistic tape recorder, which it may well have been, you can nevertheless hear Jimmy Raney playing much as he did in his youth - endless and fluid lines of crystalline harmonic logic. He's accompanied on all tunes by some straightforward electric bass and on some tunes by a second guitar. No drums. No horns. Just Jimmy Raney as he was in 1974, just out of "retirement" and embarking on the last phase of his career."

"Gambit's issue of this previously unknown Jimmy Raney session from 1974 is good news for all jazz guitar fans. Each disc will entertain you with 70+ minutes of solid guitar music done as only Raney could do. There are no comments or jokes, no lengthy introductions or pauses. These live recordings are jazz guitar music from start to finish. Kudos to Gambit, an excellent Spanish firm, for yet another fine jazz package."
