It's been said "You can't judge a book by its cover," but in the case of the album "Star Eyes," you can judge the music on this CD by its cover. Like a brea th of fresh air into the jazz scene, this double-album of 16 songs (on 15 tracks) contains a variety of jazz standards, bossa n ova tunes and originals that display Ms. Bender's unusual amount of vocal versatility. First on the list is her spectacular sc atting, reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald and Anita O'Day on the Cole Porter standard "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Secondly are h er delightful interpretations of Brazilian bossa nova classics such as "Summer Samba" and "My Little Boat" that are in the clas s of the great Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto (of "Girl from Ipanema" fame). Third is the cool jazz phrasing she evokes on "Time After Time" with inflections similar to Chet Baker and Blossom Dearie. Fourth, and most impressive, is her sense of swi ng on t he tracks of "Cherokee," "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Bird Alone" that many die hard jazz fans into Sarah Vaughan and Abbey Linco ln will savor. The influence of legendary singers on Ms. Bender is apparent, and she adds layers of feeling and her own style into the mix. Perhaps Ms. Bender has more than "Star Eyes." Perhaps she just might be the definition of a star.« less

"Came across Joan in a pretty amazing article and photo spread in the Oct issue of Jazziz Magazine. Hey, forget the photo spread layout, use of sexuality to call attention to her CD, etc. This lady can sing!!!! Her CD puts me in mind of one of those perfect small candle lit Village club setting on a rainy night in New York City. It's too easy to compare her to Diana Kral but there is much more with Sinatra phrasing, Fitsgerald influenced scat and Vaughan swing. This is a very good CD. Take a chance on a unknown and just buy it!!!"
Worth the Risk!

"Joan Bender's self-produced first CD, "Star Eyes" is a great example of what talent, good-looks, and no-nonsense musicality can create. Bender's album is rich with respect for the jazz vocal tradition. One hears touches of Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. (And I'm not the first-or the last!-to say this.) Like these greats she judiciously uses straight-tone with sprinkles of vibrato, she scats, she flirtingly plays with words (and what lucky words they are!), and she even writes jazz tunes (two of which are on the CD). She takes chances. Yet, her unique contribution is an uncanny upbeat sound very welcome in a market too often somber. Still, "Star Eyes" has all you'd expect in a jazz vocal album: fresh interpretations of standards, a couple new tunes, together with a twist of optimism. Although interviewed in the October JAZZIZ, that reviewer missed the point about this up-and-coming songstress: sure, she's sexy, but that's just eye-candy (and what a lot of candy you get for your money!). Bender's voice reminds jazz lovers why we never tire of the classics: we get to hear them again through her loving lips. So, take a chance on an unknown. She's worth the risk."
Joan Bender a New Star

"I just got Joan Bender's CD "Star Eyes" and I'm very excited
about this new star on the jazz scene. Her voice is so upbeat and clear and also at times so sultry
and soulful. She has the best of both emotions in her range. The samba rendition of "So Nice" and the bossa nova "My Little Boat"(O Barquinho) are refreshing and innovative. In the haunting "Laura" and the oh-so romantic "Time After Time"
I was taken to another place entirely. The rest of the album is very enjoyable, but I won't describe it. Surprise yourself.

"Joan has a very smooth voice, and a good song selection on her first CD. She can sing the standards as well as newer songs. Her voice doesn't waver, and can dominate. I look forward to hearing more of her, and hope she gets the exposure she deserves.
And you will LOVE the pictures on the cover and the inside!
Great going, Joan! Best of luck to you.Tom"
