CD Reviews

You can't go wrong with this CD

"This is a re-release of a 1971 album, including some extras, and it is a very worthwhile purchase. I found myself wishing that the tracks could have been cleaned up a bit, because some of the tracks were uneven in tone, with some of the vocals out of balance. Even so, even ONE of the best songs on this CD is worth the price of the whole album, and there are many real winners here from this talented Northern bluegrass band. No Joe Val album would be complete without a chance to hear his vocal acrobatics, and "Where the Old Red River Flows" does not disappoint. But what I really can't stop listening to, are two of the gospel tracks: "Do You Live What You Preach?" and "You'll Be Rewarded Over There", both of which feature harmonies that send chills down my spine, they are so beautiful. "Ginger Brandy" is a treat, as is "Comin' on Strong." You can't go wrong with this CD, though I rate it 4 stars instead of 5 for the variable sound quality among the tracks."
Solid, historic bluegrass.

"This reissue of Rounder Records' first ever bluegrass recording (1971) is a must for all New England bluegrass fans. Joe Val is New England's best recognized Bluegrass talent for a reason. He's good. On this album, with the New England Bluegrass Boys, he is in top form and because he is joined by fellow tennor, Herb Applin, this album is truly a unique offering. And for this reason, it takes a bit of getting used to. Bluegrass listeners are so used to hearing harmonized voices from diferrent vocal ranges that hearing these two tennors together can leave you a bit wanting. But enjoy what they offer. It's different. But it's good. Actually it's great. And with three extra tracks added to the CD, you now have 16 songs to revel in.My favorites: One Morning in May, Comin' On Strong, and I Never Will Marry. Long live northern bluegrass!"

"heyI think this is one of the greatest bluegrass records ever made...i agree with the last reviewer....its sad that such few people are aware of this little gem of a record...too bad this record hasn't gotten the kind of exposure that it most certainly deserves.....the two part harmonies on this record are at times ear piercing....and the songs are truly memorable....I happen to love the bass line throughout...fantastic...buy this record fellow bluegrass fan and u shall NOT be wasting your money!!!"
