"One of the best Goldberg Variations. His Beethoven ( except his violin and cello Sonatas ) may be controversial, his Schumann may be dry or even boring, but never his Bach. This is inspiring and poetic, something you will never get tired of whether it is a sleepless night, or during the day, or while you're working. Those who love Glenn Gould should perhaps lend their ears to him as well, it is quite rewarding. We have a fuller piano sound here and the tone is beautiful too. Sometimes it makes sense to listen to a German playing German music!Nikolayeva might sound great when you first hear her or even the second or third time, and then you'll probably grow tired. You can forget about Canini or even Weissenberg. The recorded sound is very good too. Something nice to have: definitely a great human culture. Enjoy!"

"for almost 40 years this has been one of my favorite goldberg recordings; i was delighted to find it rereleased on cd at last. as written the variation sections should be played A.A:B.B, but Kempff plays them A.A:B; this has the effect of giving each section a sense of impetus and climax while retaining the baroque repeated textures and focusing the musical narrative. Kempff's touch is fluent, balanced and varied; his tempi are beautifully judged, the voices are distinctive and clearly woven, and the tone of the piano is suitably clear, almost bell like. my one cavil is that DGG did not reproduce the original vinyl album cover of the patterns on a chladni plate. i was playing this once 30 years ago when a friend came over; she stopped in the middle of the room, listened, and said, "what IS that? it's BEAUTIFUL!" yes, it really is."

"after hearing Glenn Gould's lengedary for many years, Kempff opened another door for us. Through the whole progress, it is magical to tell how he let the music speak by itself without any extra pushing and willing, and more important, how the music explored with the tranquility and peace."
"Wilhelm Kempff magisterial vision, refined style, exquisite phrasing, exceptional cantabiles, and sharp intelligence made an astonishing reading of the Goldberg Variations.
Go for this valuable document.

"I have a couple of other Goldbergs (Perahia on piano & Leonhardt on harpischord) which are pretty good, but pale in comparison to this one by Kempff. This is probably the most relaxing disc I have. It is especially pleasing to listen to kicked back in the easy chair after work, while enjoying a T & T or when I'm falling asleep. The asking price of over $30 is ridiculous, but it can usually be found for between $8 and $15 from other sellers (used)."
