CD Reviews

Outstanding.

"These CDs are a favorite of my classical collection. Haimovitz's tone is clear, warm, and beautifully recorded, and I found his interpretation to be very emotional and expressive but still energetic. He does some very adventurous things in his interpretation that may be frowned upon by a Bach "purist", but none of them are outside the realm of good taste in my opinion- Haimovitz has a very good ear. I recommend this CD often to those looking for the Bach Suites: this collection stands up to the best that I have heard, those being the Fournier, Tortelier, and Starker, all of which are routinely touted as the definitive versions. Certainly nothing against those recordings in the slightest, on the contrary I think one needs them all, but this Haimovitz takes its place at the top of my list of recent digital readings. It makes a great addition to any collection, and is also an interesting alternative to the aformentioned.

As an added bonus, the CDs are mastered in 24 bit HDCD format for the audiophile who has the stereo gear to take advantage of this technology- but also play normally on regular CD players."
I guess I'm the ODD GUY here!

"First, let me preface this short review with the fact that these 6 lovely pieces are among my very most favorite music. Small, intimate, deeply heart-felt and personal, where the performer simply becomes one with the music or they do not work. I have many many recordings of these works (see my "So You'd Like To List(s)" here for a complete listing of the recordings I own and comment on).

This recording caught my eye in a local shop, and so I grabbed it up, loving these pieces as I do. I took it home, made tea, got comfortable, and popped it onto my player. What a God-awful experience it was for me. I was simply knocked over with this set. For the life of me, I cannot bear to put these discs on and even try listening again. I am, as you will see from my list noted above, a "purist" I guess, and cannot warm to the screeching, squawking, "out there" renditions presented here. Yet, you see two 5-star reviews here also, so, "somebody likes them".....HOWEVER, I would recommend you check my list, and carefully consider before buying this particular set...borrow from somebody, or, if you're lucky enough to live near a music shop that allows you to listen first, by all means take this route before laying down your hard-earned cash!

I found this set perfectly dreadful, and personally would not recommend it. ~operabruin"
