CD Reviews

Silky smooth voice & cool lyrics - brilliant gospel jazz.

"On this album, John Butler writes all of his songs but offers a lovely variety rather than monotony. His voice gives you a mellow and laid back feel as he sings almost effortlessly. Yet, his excellent voice range hits both high and low notes with equal ease. In fact, I think his voice can best be described as Al Green meeting Marvin Gaye. The first two tracks "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" and "Cast Your Cares" blend into each other almost seamlessly. A definite favourite track is "Cast Your Cares" which essentially incorporates all of the qualities I have just mentioned. Mico Roberts combines beautifully with John on the track "It's Got To Be Real". Her sultry, jazzy voice reminds me a little of Mica Paris. His instrumentalists are experts in their trade and do justice to instrumental versions of "Sinking Sand" and "Cast Your Cares". Jacques Johnson plays the alto sax while his son strums the guitar. For people new to gospel, you will not feel intimidated or "preached at" on this album at all. His writing is sometimes philosphical and reflective like in "What's Going On" but also joyful and encouraging as in "Everything's Gonna Be Alright". All in all, you can find a song for almost every mood and taste."
