Synopsis
Product Description Bluegrass, Newgrass, Gospelgrass, Rock N' Rollgrass...true innovators like John Cowan break boundaries and personify innovation. John's ability to take audiences on a musical journey through multiple genres has made him one of the most unique artists of his generation. Cowan rose to fame when he became the lead singer for New Grass Revival. He and band mates Sam Bush, Bela Fleck and Pat Flynn introduced a new generation of music fans to an explosive, experimental brand of bluegrass: 'Newgrass'. On his own, John has been free to give his creative muse full rein. He recorded a series of critically acclaimed albums spanning the musical spectrum, often bending and blending genres. On The Massenburg Sessions Cowan collaborated with legendary producer George Massenburg (Little Feat, Dixie Chicks, Linda Ronstadt and Randy Newman, among others) and recorded the entire album live in the studio with no overdubs and no editing. The sound of this brilliant recording was achieved through placement of the instruments and microphones in the studio. Cowan wraps elements of Gospel, Cajun, Celtic and Blues in a bluegrass format that manages to stay true to the roots while exploring and forging new horizons. The Massenburg Sessions includes special guest appearances by Del McCoury , Reese Wynans and Maura O'Connell |
CD ReviewsBeautiful! Nancy | Nashville, TN | 07/04/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "I am really enjoying this CD. My favorites at the moment are "Jesus Gave Me Water", an old Sam Cook gospel song performed A Capella with John's incredible voice soaring over excellent harmonies, and "Carry On", an uplifting anthem written by John and Bob Lucas after the death of John's stepson. I also love "Can't You Hear Me Callin'" with John and Del McCoury's beautiful high lonesome harmonies and the gorgeous Greg Garing ballad, "Safe Within Your Arms". Oh, and "Black Blizzard", with just Shad Cobb's amazing fiddle and John's vocals. Now that I think of it, there aren't any songs on this CD that I don't like! It was recorded and produced by the renowned George Massenburg live in the studio "around the mike", and has the feel of a living room concert rather than the usual "bells and whistles" of a studio recording. Guests including Del, Ronnie and Rob McCoury, Maura O'Connell, Darrell Scott, Reese Wynans, and Jon Randall Stewart add their own special gifts. I think you'll like it!" John Cowan Band rocks in the bluegrass Mar Payton | N. GA USA | 06/24/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "If you get a chance to see the John Cowan Band live, do NOT miss them! My family and I had the pleasure of seeing them perform some of this great music in Dahlonega, Georgia, at the Crimson Moon. That night, this show became the standard to which we compare all live music.
We were elated to see this newest release. These professional and passionate musicians make beautiful sounds and you could say it's Bluegrass but it's so much more. I could rave on but you wouldn't believe it. They are a great, exciting and memorable band." |
