A collection of slow blues--with the notable exception of the title track, which is catchier, more uptempo, and closer to the sound that made elder statesman John Lee Hooker famous--Sittin' Here Thinkin' is long overdue for a reissue on CD. Originally released in the late '70s, recorded sometime in the late 1950s (and due to Hooker's plethora of dates under various names for various labels at the time, no one's sure exactly when these were made or who the backing musicians are), the aptly titled album is a reflective, quietly intense body of work by an already-mature artist. There's an easy-swinging feel to "How Long?" and a great guitar solo on "I Believe I'll Lose My Mind," as well as a toe-tapping take on the classic "C.C. Rider" and the rollicking title track. This is quintessential Hooker--relaxed and informal, but every note falls into place right where it should. --Genevieve Williams

CD Reviews

Excellent choice for blues guitar and John Lee fans!

"When I first saw this CD in my local store, I thought, well, here's another compilation of songs I already have on a half-dozen other CDs. Au contraire! This is an excellent disc of material I had not heard. The low price is just another bonus that I haven't figured out. Recorded in the early 50's with second guitarist Eddie Kirkland (who is not credited), this is a great example of John Lee, who does not adhere to a strict twelve-bar format, being followed pretty well by a second guitar (who shares a lot of lead duties), bass, and drums. Buy it right away."

"I bought this album without ever hearing a single note in the late 1970's. I fell in love with John Lees' voice and musical atmosphere they brought to this recording. I tried to find other John Lee Hooker recordings that were simular in style, but to be totally frank, none can be found. I have alot of JLH greatest hits albums, but "Sittin' Here Thinking" is a JHL masterpice! This recording can become your best friend when you're lonely or just alone. Great guitar playing, great singing, not so great musicianship which makes this a great blues recording. Oh yes, my frist copy was stolen and I was never able to find it until I discovered it in CD form @ Amazon."
