"The first album on this two-album CD is a John Lewis "anthology," released in 1959. The sidemen (Jim Hall, Connie Kay, Percy Heath, and Barry Galbraith) vary from track to track, but each piece is extraordinary. The songs range from lyrical (Little Girl Blue, It Never Entered My Mind) to swinging (Harlequin). This CD was my first Lewis purchase, and it was a lucky discovery - it's a great introduction both to his playing and his compositions. The second CD consists of alternating tracks by European pianists Dick Katz, Derek Smith, and Rene Urtreger, all playing in a style similar to Lewis. Recorded in 1958. Great listening."
