CD ReviewsStories of Love Katherine | Colorado, USA | 01/02/2005 (3 out of 5 stars) "I love John McDermott's voice but this cd just didn't do it for me. I played it once and today it rests, gathering dust, on the shelf. John can turn out a lovely ballad - he did it with "Mona Lisa" - but the collection on this cd made me wonder if John has lost his ability to choose songs that best showcase his voice. I'd never want to limit him to only traditional Scottish and Irish tunes, but I hope that next time he decides to depart from that genre he does a better job of picking out songs. If you want a John McDermott cd, get "A Day to Myself" -it's much, much better than this one." Pleasant Fare But Let Me Hear The Old Songs kjenfan | United States | 08/09/2004 (3 out of 5 stars) "Since John McDermott is my favorite singer (of his genre and most others) I wish I could have liked Stories of Love more than I do. The orchestration is quite good and his voice as beautiful as ever. There are a few standout songs, The Girl From Ipanema being the best, along with How Insensitive. The only problem for me is that I wasn't really moved by this album. I listen to it occasionally, but I honestly don't play it over and over like I do his other albums. Sorry to stifle your creativity, John, but could we please have another album of traditional favorites. Call me selfish, but I want to hear the quiver in your voice and picture the tear in your eye." Not just Celtic anymore! Barbara Lev | Rockaway Park, NY | 02/10/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "John McDermott takes a sharp turn away from his "normal" range of music and does a CD of soft, sexy Bossa Nova songs. The arrangements are lush, the musicians are absolutely perfect and the music alone would be worth the price of this CD. John's versions of these songs are just spectacular. Wee Small Hours is a song of desire that comes straight from the heart. Such few words but they say so very much. I love this arrangement. This particular song along with This Is ALL I Ask has become a regular part of John's concert songs on his last few tours and the audience reaction has been spectacular! If anyone has him in their mind as "just an Irish tenor" then this CD should change their mind and wake them up to just how talented a singer he really is. His rendition of Girl From Ipanema should have you smiling. You can hear the fun he has with this song and the boucy tune is so catchy. All the songs sound fresh and each one portrays a different emotion in the strange world of love. Snuggle up to your loved one, put your head on his/her shoulder and put this CD on. It is a romantic journey courtesy of John, Brigham, Vern, Jason and all the wonderful musicians who put it together. The only problem with this CD is it is NOT long enough! It leaves you wanting more! Buy this CD, put it on, and ENJOY!"
