"Immerse yourself in this one, it's well worth the journey. This soundtrack is a joy to listen to. It is a wonderful tribute to the mystery and complexity of Calcutta, and of course, to the kids."

"This album is extremely well produced. It is a unique mix of Indian vocals, modern rythms and catchy hooks. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the movie! Some songs contain percussion tracks that are reminiscent of African or Latin music. My favorite song is Gopala which has an unforgettable vocal hook. If you haven't seen the movie, it is a must see... INSPIRATIONAL!"
Born Into Brothels soundtrack review

"One of the aspects of the recent film documentary entitled 'Born Into Brothels', that impressed me most was the music soundtrack. John McDowell
enlisted a group of wonderfully talented musicians from both western and eastern influence and the concept, although not a new idea, was magical!
There's more to this music than one's ear mnight catch while viewing the
film. Not only is the music deep and entirely sympathetic to the story, the performances unto themselves are beautiful, refreshing and very moving.
From the first sensual female vocal nuances to the beautifully executed Indian wind instrumental cues, and everything inbetween, you recognize that these are probably some of the best eastern musicians available. The feeling that lingered after the CD had finished playing was one of love and soft sympathy for the children, the focus of the film. Without understanding a word of the language, I could still derive a clear and moving picture of the story and its characters. This is a testament, not only to John McDowell's wonderful compositional skills, but also to John's ability to bring out the creative energies of his musicians. As a composer myself, I highly recommend this CD. I hope you feel the love like I did."
