"I bought this cd for "Blue Christmas". So, it was the first track I played, and I stopped it after 30 seconds. What I heard sounded as though it was recorded a week before he passed away. Then I read the liner notes and see this is a reprint of a 1991 title of the same name. What the....?!
I can only assume this is during a time of one of Mr. Cash's prolonged illnesses. At first I thought the tracks had been manipulated, possibly slowed down, but no, it's really how it was recorded. He sings without enthusiasm, as though he was wheeled in, handed some sheet music and told to sing. His voice is weak and cracks constantly; he sounds feeble and wan.
Unless Mr. Cash was strapped for cash, I can't fathom why his friends and handlers didn't step in and say, "Johnny, this isn't your best work. Let's shelve it until you are feeling better."
I'll be blunt here - this cd is so awful it's depressing. Unless you're suicidal, this is not the Christmas music nor the Johnny Cash you want to hear."
