"Johnny Darrell's heyday was 1965-1970 with United Artists. Unfotunately none of Darrell's United Artist material is available domestically. This album consists of rerecordings that Darrell made for Gusto in the late 70s. While reasonably faithful to the original arrangements, Gusto's recordings were low budget and lack the sparkle of the United Artist recordings. That said, these recordings are worth having as Johnny Darrell has a distinctive voice and was an excellent judge of material. Johnny Darrell was the first artist to record the following (C&W charts / CB=Cashbox, BB= Billboard):
Green Green Grass of Home (#12 CB - 1965)
As Long As the Wind Blows (#16 CB, #30 BB - 1966)
Ruby, Don't Take Your Love (#7 CB, #9 BB - 1967)
Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp (#14 CB, #22 BB- 1968)
With Pen In Hand (#4 CB, #3 BB - 1968)
All of Darrell's hits are on this collection so if you like these recordings you may want to pick up the excellent Aussie import SINGING IT LONESOME, or find some of his vinyl albums
