(4 out of 5 stars)
"Johnny "Guitar" Watson is best known for his hit song "Gangster of Love," but when most of these recording were made, he was just a young blues singer/guitarist who was trying to find his way.
This nice collections shows off the young Watson, who was even billed as Young John Watson, show off his singing and playing skills on such cuts as "Half Pint Of Whiskey," " Cuttin' In," "Half Pint Of Whiskey," "Gettin' Drunk," and two versions of his classic "Space Guitar."
Watson was a very talented singer and player who in his later years embraced an eccentric funk star, but these songs show his blues beginnings, and reveal a talent that still isn't as appreciated as he should be.
