"Johnny Halliday is the equivalent of Elvis Presley for the French. "Retiens la nuit" was composed by Charles Aznavour and Georges Garvarentz (his brother in law). After dancing on this slow-dance in the Riviera night-clubs, hundred of french girls decided time had come for them to become women. The music is happy, the words say "Hold me tight until the end of the night, the end of the world". Nothing original there but the fact that erotism was not totally admitted yet in popular songs before this one. All other songs are symbols for french "joie de vivre", "nouvelle vague" and "high-life" in French Riviera. They can be danced as "twist", "rock&roll" or slow-dance."
