"Johnny Mathis could sing out the phone book and I would be standing there, applauding and grinning from ear to ear! His gift is incredibly special--his sense of timing, his sensitive phrasing and his excellent diction combine to make his singing very, very special. This four CD set has eighty-six songs all performed to perfection--and beyond--by this masterful entertainer; this is clearly a must-have for his fans.
There are so many songs I scarcely know where to begin; every one's a winner and there's not a dud in the lot. Listen for Mathis classics including "It's Not for Me to Say;" "Chances Are;" "A Certain Smile;" "Misty;" "What Will My Mary Say;" "Wonderful! Wonderful!" and quite a few more. We also get sublime renditions of other ageless tunes when Johnny Mathis sings "Tonight;" "Smile;" "Speak Softly Love;" "It's All in the Game" and more.
There are also duets with Barbra Streisand ("I Have a Love/One Hand, One Heart"); Jane Olivor ("The Last Time I Felt Like This"); Deniece Williams ("Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" and "Love Won't Let Me Wait") and Dionne Warwick (Friends in Love"). There are even songs that were impossible to find on CD until this box set was released; we get "You Belong to Me" with Johnny singing this sweetly; "The Island;" "Baia" and "Photograph."
The box set also comes with a booklet that includes photos, brief remarks by Johnny Mathis about each and every song on all four CDs; an essay by Todd Everett and even more comments by Gene Lees.
I highly recommend this four CD set for any Johnny Mathis fan; they will not be disappointed. Thank you, Johnny Mathis!"
