Discovered by DJ and singer The Big Bopper whilst singing with The Shades, Johnny Preston worked with The Big Bopper on his early recordings. Indeed, it was Big Bopper who wrote Running Bear, with the writer and George Jones providing the song with its distinctive Indian whoops. With Big Bopper being killed in the same plane crash that claimed the life of Buddy Holly, the release of Running Bear was held back, but once released it powered its way to the top of both the US and UK charts. Johnny Preston would not return to either summit but did enjoy subsequent success, most notably with Cradle Of Love, a Top Ten hit on both sides of the Atlantic.
