This 2004 album, Johnny's first studio recording in six years, proved once again that this is one '60s rocker whose vitality remains undimmed. Not only does his talent attract an unbelievable line-up of musicians on this record--Herb Pedersen, Chris Hillman, Benmont Tench, Waddy Wachtel, Bob Glaub, Phil Jones, etc.--but the man once again displays his uncanny ability to interpret other artists' material. A radically-reworked version of Leadbelly's `Midnight Special' kicks off the album, then Johnny goes right into the Beatles' `I'll Be Back', with his ringing 12-string leading the way, as it does on his cover of the Byrds' `Feel a Whole Lot Better'. The record also includes dazzling versions of McCartney's `Everynight' and Oscar Brown, Jr.'s `The Snake', as well as Mel Tillis' `Walk on Boy' and Van Morrison's `Songwriter.
