Ronald Van Scherpenzeel | Madrid, Spain | 04/24/2006 (4 out of 5 stars) "Johnny doesn't have a gifted voice - a bit too high - but every time I purchase one of his records I'm always very pleased because this small "lack" is highly substituted by either wonderful melodies or real nice up-tempo songs. He probably has -in overall- the most beautiful melodic songs ever listened to. Although considered a Tex Mex artist like Freddie Fender, I don't agree with that. To me he's a real country singer with some latin orientated songs. As a matter of fact his Spanish is less fluent and has more accent than Freddie or Raul Malo. After 3 experiences with JR records lately I will keep on buying his stuff. He is abolutely worth it! " His hits for Epic label Cory L. "Down on the Rio Grande," "Foolin" and "How Could I Love Her So Much," were all top 10 hits in the late 70's and early 80's. All songs here are original recordings. The packaging is budget line. This album, though, seems to cover the later (more poppish) sounds of Johnny, and in my opinion, does not do him justice. If you want to hear the absolute best sounds of Johnny Rodriguez, buy his "Hits" album. However, this album is still far from bad, and is well worth your time and money. It is far superior to anything coming out of Nashville (which may not sound like much of an endorsement), but it is not quite up to par with his "Hits" collection. "North Of the Border" is the real stand out here, and you'll get more Mexican (South of the Border Redneck!) flavor with this collection."
