"This boxed set contains johnny winter's first two lps on the columbia label- johnny winter and second winter- coupled with the lesser known captured live. the first recording still stands as perhaps johnny's best album ever- really encapsulating his virtuoso but quite authentic blues stylings. from blistering electric guitar solos galore to a couple solo acoustic pieces and a very nice rendition of the ray charles classic drown in my own tears, this record is a must have for fans of winter, blues fans and guitar lovers of all genres. second winter, the followup is a bit more spotty- with a couple rock n roll songs (eg johnny b good) thrown in. winter also goes for a heavier elecric rock sound on several cuts, utilizing a wah wah pedal. the high point to second winter is his treatment of bob dylan's highway 61 revisited, in my opinion the best cover of a dylan song after hendrix's version of all along the watchtower. the third CD, captured live is also a decent document of johnny circa 1970s in a live setting. overall, this box set is an affordable way to get all three recordings--keeping in mind that the 1st and 3rd CD included here are rather short (35 mins. approx) by today's CD length standards. but all in all a good deal."
