Same Dream is Jon Secada's first album of original English-language tunes in five years, and it finds him gunning for a second round of commercial success. Secada soared through the early '90s as a hugely successful, pop-crossover star via the hits "Just Another Day" and "Angel." His flame faded quickly, however, and he's spent the time since then penning hits for the likes of Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Patricia Manterola and Jaci Velasquez. Time will tell if radio listeners weaned on 50 Cent and Ashlee Simpson will warm to Secada's earnest brand of shiny-happy pop. Whatever happens, it's a real treat to hear the Cuban singer wrap his emotive vocals around catchy choruses and strong melodies. In fact, Secada's middle-of-the-road pop seems downright revolutionary when stacked against so many ironic rock stars and mad-dog hip-hoppers. There's a free-and-easy vibe that permeates much of Same Dream, from the noble strains of kick-off track "Bring on the Sun" to the breezy appeal of "Window to My Heart." A clever Hall & Oates sample anchors "My Baby Don't Rock Like That," and "Tender Love" finds Secada slipping easily into a summery R&B groove, complete with guest rap breaks and cooing female vocals. As a bonus, Same Dream includes Secada's takes on a pair of big hits he penned for other artists. He manages a serviceable, if similar, version of "She's All I Ever Had," a big ballad for Martin. But Secada infuses "Coming Out of the Dark," a signature Estefan tune, with just enough edge to make it work for him. It also serves as a fitting re-introduction to a talented, ultimately underrated, vocal talent. --Joey Guerra

THE ALBUM OF HIS CAREER--AGAIN
Chuck Taylor | New York | 10/26/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jon Secada has made the album of his career-again. Thirteen years after setting a new standard for soaring male vocals accompanying airborne melodies, Secada showcases all the flavors he has mastered over time. This is the kind of meticulously produced album that most of us thought were a thing of the past. Every one of the 13 tracks on "Same Dream" accomplishes a distinct mission. There is the uptempo Latin pop gem "It's Over" and first single "Window to My Heart" (already charting at AC), the heartbreaking ballad "Last to Know" and the hopeful, intimately voiced title track. There is also a reggaetón jam, an R&B sizzler that samples Hall & Oates and versions of two hits Secada wrote for others: "She's All I Ever Had" for Ricky Martin and "Coming Out of the Dark" for Gloria Estefan. "Dream" only grows more fruitful with repeated listening. Fine work.-Chuck Taylor/Billboard Magazine"
