Haydn's doodles...

"Two stars? I agree that this recording doesn't give us anything "new & exciting", but if these were masterpieces, then there would already be dozens of recordings. Criticizing them for being minor diversions is only stating the obvious.

These are musical doodles, akin to Mozart's dances. The question is, if we take them as doodles, are they good doodles or bad doodles? As far as this listener is concerned, they are *very* entertaining and enjoyable doodles, well worth owning (if you have a predilection for doodles and if you have exhausted the masterpieces). The performances are trenchant and fun-filled. Haydn's music is playful, light filled, and full of interesting harmonic twists and diversions, much more unbuttoned than his "serious" music.

They are much more interesting and enjoyable than the true "Divertimentos" of his youth, before he was writing symphonies. CDs of these pieces are hard to come by, being mostly out of print.

If you like lighthearted, diversionary but interesting music, try this out.

As an aside, the Notturni performed on this CD were written by Haydn shortly after he learned of Mozart's death. He was never again to write such chromatic music and some musicologists believe that they were his tribute to Mozart. Indeed, to my ears, he never comes closer to the sunny melodies and chromaticisms of Mozart than in these Notturni."
