Synopsis

Product Description
When we reissued Sammy's entire Reprise album catalog a few years back, we left out two albums for what we thought were good reasons. Almost all of the tracks on the first, 'Sammy Steps Out', appeared on albums we did reissue, so it made sense to skip that one. The second, 'Treasury of Golden Hits', was a greatest-hits record. Or so we thought. It turns out that the 'golden hits' in question were actually songs that for the most part Sammy had recorded for Decca before he jumped to Reprise, so this album actually features new interpretations Sammy cut with arranger Mort Stevens! We really have egg on our face, but, man, does that egg taste and sound good, as we re-visit Sammy's Reprise catalog one more time for updated versions. Like on our other Sammy reissues, Jim Ritz supplies notes that put this overlooked album into the context of the man s entire career.

CD Reviews

The best version of That Old Black Magic there is!
Larry J. Davenport | Seattle, WA USA | 06/18/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Sammy at his best! I have all Sammy's work. My favorite is his "Coconut Grove" LP but it lacks my favorite song, That Old Black Magic. I prefer this version to his original recording because by the time he recorded for Reprise and was thoroughly ensconced as a member of the Rat Pack, he had the confidence to belt out this number as well as the rest of the songs on the album. For newbies to Sammy, this is a great place to start."
