Having performed with flamenco masters, jazz players, Indian and Iranian musicians, and film composers, Juan Carmona possesses a keen awareness of flamenco tradition while keeping his ears open to compatible musical styles. On Caminos Nuevos, the France-based guitarist strikes a harmonious balance between more traditional compositions such as the lively bulería "Borboreo"--a standout track that spotlights the heavenly vocals of Françoise Atlan--with jazzier pieces such as the animated opening rumba, "Aguita," and the languid balada, "Sirena," both of which feature pianist Ricardo Larroze. The talented Carmona displays impressive agility on the frets while playing varied styles of flamenco, and he shines on the subdued solo piece, "Oscuro," a composition highlighting his multifaceted technique. The album also includes a decent compact disc that includes guitar tabulature, a brief history of flamenco (unfortunately only translated in French), media releases about Carmona (ditto), and a photo essay on the making of his recent music video. --Bryan Reesman
