Synopsis

The late Junior Wells really was a kid (in blues terms, at least) when he recorded these titles early in his career. They're firmly in the mold set by the guys across town at Chess. Quite often, Wells is dwarfed by guitarist Earl Hooker, whose delightful pinched tone and airy lines are all over most of these titles, "Universal Rock" in particular. Other highlights include the original version of Wells's theme song "Messin' with the Kid," the blues standard "It Hurts Me Too," and a blasting instrumental "Calling All Blues." Gesturing vainly toward rock & roll radio, Junior cut "I Need Me a Car," but, as he soon discovered, he was on safer ground with bar blues. --Colin EscottCOLIN ESCOTT

CD Reviews

Well, yeah but....

"Actually, there's a remastered version of this available with 24 songs, not the paltry 23 songs that must do for those sad folks who bought this one! It's called "Calling All Blues". The one drawback to the newer one is that it doesn't have artist listings for the musicians playing, like this does. But, heck, Junior Wells and Earl Hooker. Do you really need to know more? This is an exceptional example of 2nd gen Chicago harp blues. This was the cat who replaced Little Walter after Walter jumped ship in the middle of a tour backing Muddy Waters. There really isn't a better endorsement on earth than Muddy hiring you for your harp playing. Buy it, or your last words might be "Calling all bluxxxxx", not, "Rosebud.""

"I bought this cd to hear "Messin' with the Kid" which I think was covered so well by the Blues Brothers. Junior Wells is so good that there are at least a half dozen cds that you should buy before this one. "Hoodoo Man" is stunning for one. Is this particular cd bad, no, it's just not stellar like some other cds of Junior's."
