Synopsis
Album Description Tin cans, automobile brake drums, saw blades, an old computer, highway signs, oil cans, wine bottles, radiator parts, window shutters, clay flower pots, scrap metal & wood are some of the 100+ pieces of junk Knaack uses to create Junk Music ?. His CD recording, Junk Music ? contains two different types of music. One type is a musical exploration of particular "families" of materials (i.e., Wood Music, Metal Music, Shaker Music, Kitchen Music, Rock Music, Paper Music, Wind Chime Music, etc.). The second type combines these materials in compositions that focus on specific music styles (i.e., Samba, Waltz, Conga, March, etc.). Similar CDs

CD ReviewsExcellent for modern dance. . . zeromelon | Bay Area, CA | 09/11/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "To be honest, my first exposure to Donald Knaack was through his son (a very cool kid, by the way) when I was working at a theatre where Knaack was performing live for one of Twyla Tharp Dance Co.'s performances. The music is so unbelievably different from any other "noise jazz" or "noise music" out there. It's not Stomp -- it's Stomp on acid, but even weirder than that. To be honest, it's not the kind of music you just turn on in your car. Rather, it's music that one has to sit down and appreciate. I use the album to dance to when I am getting the juices flowing for choreography because it has both the hard-edge, clanging cacophony of chaos *and* an intelligent sensitivity to sound that expresses any range of emotions." Very engaging beats enolcmelca | MINNEAPOLIS, MN USA | 12/27/2001 (4 out of 5 stars) "Very authentic styles using multitracked samples of everyday items used percussively. Great variety of intonations. Really engaging for children. The rhythms and timbres are interesting and varied. A little too much reliance on simple two-bar phrases stuck together without that much and longer development, but this is a minor point. Very enjoyable. Fans of Stomp and Bang on a Can should like this."
