This debut release from Kakalla, "The Voice of Blood", is a moody album exploring everything from Balkan folk music, post klezmer mayhem, and improvisational counterpoint to sheer cacophony. The energetic "Porsheem" utilizes a post-klezmer mindset to create a compelling opener reminiscent of Zorn or Hasidic New Wave. Lyrical pieces such as "Eroot" and "Forlorn" are contrasted by the hilarious "Beekeeper's Serenade", a Mingus like romp into the story of one unfortunate beekeeper who becomes the victim of his negligence. And finally, the haunting and beautiful "Weltschmerz" leaves the listener yearning for more.
