"Herbert von Karajan always had strong affinities with Sibelius' music and this CD dating from his early period still stands as one of his finest achievements in the field. His superb mastery of structure and unerring sense of atmosphere in the intense 4th symphony remain unequalled (eclipsed only perhaps by Karajan's own re-recording with the Berlin Philharmonic in the 1960's). It is a very moving listening experience and as a recording it was greatly admired by the composer himself. The 5th symphony is equally impressive by its well-judged pacing, its heroic breath and grandeur.Recorded with the magnificent Philharmonia Orchestra in its glory days from 1952/53, this CD is made even more attractive by the inclusion of "Finlandia" and runs over 78 minutes. Albeit in mono, the sound quality is excellent for its age. Highly recommended."
