CD Reviews

A Very Nice Single

"Karen Ramirez is an artist out of the UK who's work was produced by Everything But the Girl's Ben Watt. This particular cut - "Lookin' For Love", was perhaps her biggest one and this is a maxi with some of the remixes to it. Another single with her work that features "If We Try" also has a version on it.

I have nothing but good memories when thinking about this song. It was rather popular in the summer-late fall of 1998 and any club you went to (in England) would be playing some form of the cut. Think along the lines of the time period that Nalin & Kane's "Beachball", Camisra's "Let Me Show You" or Cafe Del Mar's "Energy 52" were popular. This song had a catchy beat and a sort of EBTG vibe and sound that was fresh, and her sound was a welcome change of pace to the more commercial pop tunes, like the Top of the Pops albums, All Saints, B*Witched (**shudder**) etc. The mixes on this cd go from a drum & Bass vibe, to a full out trance remake along with a couple of other club mixed cuts. Also, there is a more mellow version of the song too. Throughout, Karen's voice is actually a bit soothing - she doesn't streak or shout, she just sings softly and naturally.

Admittedly, I wonder if the one I have is the same as this - mine has 5 tracks and I remember in the UK there were 2 different maxi singles that came out - this being the only one I could find (took me a good while to actually get her name). Is it worth the 23 bucks? It would be easy for me to say 'no' since I own it. But at the same time, it brings back so many great memories of friends and about the time that this song was popular. Everything from simple walks to ASDA to hitting the nightspots around town or hearing it playing overhead while sifting through music at the local record shops in England (getting homesick...). However; it's the original edit that I prefer over the remixes. As for other Karen Ramirez works? Sadly, I haven't heard of any other releases of hers since 1999 when a remix album came out."
For a music lover with appreciation

"Okay this is a must for any music lover in which your taste sometimes reflects a lust for sensible electronica music with a lyrical effort that communicates a reason for making this song. This production work is the artisitc expression of Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn of EBTG. As you listen to this song you can almost hear or imagine what this song would song like if Tracey were to sing it herself. It has a hook that takes your imagination to a level of wonder and with that a certain goodness stems from the listening experience. This is a great package and the mixes are each unique in a specific way. If you are into singles packages this is a must have for your collection and listening experience when in the mood for some good music. For more music suggestions email to muiscmatt19@hotmail.com.
