CD Reviews

Gems from one of the best Brazilian bands
Mauricio Bussab | Sao Paulo, SP Brazil | 10/14/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The last Karnak show was in 2002. Since then they have reunited once a year to play their hits and celebrate their ongoing friendship.

The band was a weird mixture of Brazil and rest-of-the-third-world music, resulting in unusual beats, with fantastic musicians and André Abujamra, a front man that was (and still is in his solo career) a gifted songwriter.

In the 12 years the band was active they acquired a cult following in Sao Paulo, a cult that was always there for their shows to witness the strength of their live performances. With Karnak it was always like this: studio albums showing a controlled, rococo production and raw, vibrant shows. We got used to that.

It was a surprise to hear that they were planning to release a posthumous live album, collecting shows from their entire career. The CD is fantastic, especially if you know their sound.

It is underproduced and powerful. Just like live albums used to be."
