CD Reviews

Bestest Ever
Lily Vines | 10/08/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is incredible! Kate's writing and vocal styling is really at it's youthful peak! Lionheart and Kick Inside are the only two of her albums that contain that high, innocent vocal and lightness. Beautiful, odd lyrics and gorgeous (and odd) melodies. It's wonderful!"
Wow wow wow!

"Underrated as far as I am concerned, all of the tracks that didn't make it onto The Kick Inside. These remain some of my favourites of all-time. Kashka from Bagdad is heart breaking, Coffee Homeground is a hilarious Marlene Dietrich homage, In Search of Peter Pan is nostalgic, Wow is fun and Oh England my Lionheart is sad and very touching. The only song I cannot stand is The Warm Room. Hammer Horror is also a winner for me. Very fun and very quirky album."
The sophomore release that stands on its own...

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Kate Bush's second album "Lionheart" was released just nine months after her debut "The Kick Inside", which reached #3 in the UK album charts. At this time, Kate Bush was pressured by EMI to quickly develop a follow up to ride the success of her first record.

"Lionheart" is a more theatrical album, and at times a bit dark. Some of the songs have a dream-like quality("In Search of Peter Pan"). However, it is all these characteristics that form the true magic of this album!

"Symphony In Blue" is a joyful song that compares colors to moods. "Wow" is a dramatic ballad which describes a relationship theatrically on a stage. "Coffee Homeground" is filled with paranoia and sounds like a show tune. The album closes with the goth-horror "Hammer Horror", which I personally feel is the weakest track on the album(ironically it was the first single and only reached #44 on the UK singles chart).

Overall, I think "Lionheart" stands on it's own and shows a slightly darker side of Kate Bush's eccentric and creative mind.

4 1/2 Stars!"
