Synopsis
Album Description Ever since the November 2007 digital release of the hilarious, zeitgeist-capturing single "Ur So Gay," Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Katy Perry has been wowing critics and fans alike (including the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna) with her big voice, sassy attitude, and feisty, confessional songs. Katy's debut album, One of the Boys, is a sharp, witty pop-rock gem filled with candid tales of neurotic ex-boyfriends ("Hot N Cold," "Ur So Gay"), crazy road trips with friends ("Waking Up in Vegas"), and figuring out who you are along the way (first single "I Kissed A Girl," "Fingerprints"). While the album displays Katy's feisty, girl-power swagger, it also reveals her more vulnerable side on such regretful ballads as "Lost," "I'm Still Breathing," and "Thinking of You." Although just 23, the Santa Barbara, CA-born native has been writing songs and playing guitar for several years, and possesses the flair and confidence of a veteran storyteller. Catch her in all her glory this summer when she joins the Vans Warped Tour for its entire coast-to-coast run. Similar CDs

CD ReviewsNot Much Talent Amanda L. Davis | Adrian,MI USA | 08/04/2010 (1 out of 5 stars) ""I Kissed A Girl" is very catchy, but the rest of this album is just terrible. She has a very irritating, quavery, screechy, weird voice that I just don't like and the songs are annoying." Perry's songwriting shines on mainstream debut Music Addict | 06/29/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "Although she may seem like just another pop star looking for attention on the surface, if you look a bit deeper into the songs of Katy Perry, you'll find a clever songwriter and a true talent.
Perry first got a true taste of fame telling the story of when she got drunk and kissed a girl at a party on the album's second single, which went number one. She then ditched the predicted "one-hit wonder" status by cranking out a few more hits, such as "Hot N Cold" and "Waking Up in Vegas". While these tracks may make her seem like a "party girl", it was the album tracks that didn't get all the attention that make One of the Boys worth the time and effort. The album starts of with the pop/rocker title track where she sings about becoming more feminine and not just being one of the boys. ("Over the summer something changed/I started reading Seventeen and shaving my legs") The track's chorus instantly grabs you, and it's just one of the many irresistible hooks on the album. "Ur So Gay" tells the story of a man Katy used to date who was very feminine, however it is mistaken by many as homophobic. The album has it's fair share of ballads too. "Thinking of You" talks about missing your ex when you're with your current lover. "Lost" goes a bit deeper, taking on the emotional topic about being lost spiritually. ("So if i pray, am I just sending words into outer space?") Probably the album's best song lyrically is "I'm Still Breathing," because although the lyrics are simple, they help define how blind love really is ("No formal education/I swore way too much/But I swore you didn't care/Because we were in love") and that when it's time to let go, you just need to let go. The album concludes with "Fingerprints." A spunky little pop-rock number, in which Miss Perry (or Mrs. Brand) tells us that she's going to make something of her life and not be "sitting on the sidelines watching it pass me by." Indeed, Katy sure has come along way since she wrote those words. The lead single from her next album Teenage Dream, called California Gurls, went straight to number one, but only time will tell what the future holds for her. However, if One of the Boys is any indication, the future looks pretty good." |
