This young man's talent comes naturally -- from his great-grandmother Edith Kanaka`ole, his grandmother Pualani Kanaka`ole Kanahele, and his mother Kekuhi Kanahele-Frias. With this lineage -- and his continual thirst for knowledge -- Lopaka is blossoming into an individual worthy of caring for and expanding the Kanaka`ole traditions and values. The Haku Mele Award is presented for the best acheivement in creating a new song or chant exclusively in Hawaiian. The panel that judges eligible songs is composed of experts fluent in Hawaiian and accomplished composers of Hawaiian-language music."
