CD ReviewsA Wonderful stab at fusion to move an incredible jazz guitar D. Gorman "Crystalline Structure M | 04/24/2008 (4 out of 5 stars) "Recorded in 1980, most of the world was drifting away from fusion, but Watanabe was just starting to get into it. He more greatly defined his fusion persona in subsequent works, but this album is a very fine early stab at the fusion genre. Watanabe is a fabulous, and much under-rated guitarist. The writing on this album shows a strong, worthy grasp of American fusion. As stated, some of his later work developed a more well-defined individual persona (which allows for his delicious Japanese influence which sadly seems lacking in this work)...but this is a notable, memorable work from an artist that deserves more attention in the USA than he has received thus far. Michael Brecker occasionally puts his wonderful sax talents on this album. Other musicians of note that appear on this album are Marcus Miller and Tony Levin on bass, Mike Maineiri on vibes and Peter Erskine and Steve Jordan on drums. This album is not as much of an amazing stand-out as his later fusion works such as Mobo I, Mobo II, The Spice of Life or Kilowatt. But, this is a great 4-star album, and if you already love Kazumi's music as much as I do, you will definitely want to pick up this album! If you like fusion and you're not already listening to Kazumi, GET WITH THE PROGRAM!!! THIS GUY IS A GUITARIST YOU NEED TO HEAR!!! This is not his best album, but this is an important album from a fusion guitarist that you will love! Once again, thanks, Kazumi...from a fan of fusion guitar!!
