CD Reviews

Beautiful alto sax tone
Daniel Graser | Wappingers Falls, New York United States | 01/15/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Originally I bought this recording for the Feld sonata but I find that I am liking all of the tracks so much that I'm buying the sheet music for them. Kenneth Tse has a nicely rounded and consistent tone, something which he undoubtedly picked up from his teacher Eugene Rousseau. However, Tse surpasses his teacher in altissimo and technique. I would definitely recommend this recording to all sax players as well as people who enjoy contemporary classical music."
Enjoyable

"I admit, I deeply enjoy Kenneth Tse's playing. He has a sound and style characteristic of a former Eugene Rousseau student, which I love. With all of the newer avant garde recordings coming out for saxophone now, it is refreshing at times to hear a more traditional style of saxophone performance. With selections such as Jindrich Feld and Warren Benson Kenneth Tse delivers this with fluid perfection. Even though the selections seem as though it were modeled from a recital program, this album offers a wide array of traditional saxophone literature.

My only criticism of this CD is his interpretation of Victor Morosco's Blue Caprice. On a personal level, I believe Dr. Tse was a little too conservative on this piece. It was almost as if he was playing it to demonstrate technique and tone rather than the actual style of a jazz/blues scale laced etude. Therefore, I would not recommend this CD as a learning aid specific to the Blue Caprice."
