"[UPDATE FEBRUARY 2009 -- After spending a good deal of time with this recording, I'd raise it to five stars if Amazon's software would let me. The inferior recording technology hurts the orchestras more than it hurts Baker.]
This is one of three fine CDs offered by Amazon that feature Kenny Baker, a superb American tenor of the 1930s and 40s. In his repertory of love ballads from popular song and light opera-indeed in any kind of tenor singing-I think the beauty of his recorded voice is unmatched. (You can't, alas, hear him on this site, but excerpts for listening are provided at the other Baker CDs mentioned below.)
The light opera selections on this CD include: - "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise" and "Lover, Come Back to Me" from Sigmund Romberg's NEW MOON. "Make Believe" and "You Are Love" from Jerome Kern's SHOW BOAT. "Toyland" and "Floretta" from Victor Herbert's BABES IN TOYLAND. "The Moon and I" from Gilbert and Sullivan's MIKADO. "Wooden Wedding" and "Westwind" from Kurt Weill's ONE TOUCH OF VENUS. One surprise is the 18th century Italian love song, "Nina," long attributed to Pergolesi, but now to Legrenzio Ciampi. There are songs you have always known, and others you will wish you had. Some, you won't have realized how lovely they are, until you hear Kenny sing them.
The 24 songs here were originally recorded at 78 rpm between 1938 and 1946, then remastered for this CD in 2001. The originals had some surface noise, presumably removed by reducing the treble. This gave Baker a clearer but somewhat less rich sound. A second Baker CD featured by Amazon, LOVE WALKED IN, faced with the same problem, was more faithful to Baker's voice at the expense of some interference. The third Baker CD, BABES IN TOYLAND, has the best transfer of his voice, but unfortunately only six songs that use it. Faced with the disadvantages of choosing only one, buy all three.
