A Dream Within A Dream

"The large round clock on the wall showed the time as well past midnight on that Friday long ago in the Friend's Housing Cooperative in Madison WI. Music played softly from the other rooms and mixed with low talk and an occasional sigh. A cold winter wind whistled through the power-lines outside my third floor window. It was the mid 1970s and I was dead tired after a 12 hour shift at the corn cannery in Oconomowoc, but was waiting up for my sabrosa girl friend. The radio was tuned to WORT, the Independent Listener Supported Voice of Madison, and the Lunar Raven was playing music-to-dream-by: Nico's Marble Index, John Cale's The Academy in Peril, Syd Barrett, early Soft Machine, Sun Ra, Spooky Tooth's Ceremony, Zappa's Uncle Meat, Friend Sounds' Joyride... I drifted off into a light anticipatory sleep with the ghosts of Poe and Lovecraft dancing around the plush maroon sofa. In my dream a deep careful voice reminiscent of Karloff was warning me to watch out for Dr. Dream, but it was too late. I was lost. Then my girlfriend was kissing me and the song slowly ended as my eyes slowly opened.
If you would like to join me on that velvet sofa in that far off time, it is easier than you think. Kevin Ayers' Dr. Dream will carry you to your own special place with its dark and whimsical reverie.
