King's first solo

(5 out of 5 stars)

"When I first heard King was putting out a solo record I cringed. Thinking back to the days when my then favorite band, Kiss, put out solo records, I reluctantly bought and listened to it hoping it wouldn't be a massive disappointment. I was very wrong. I was simply amazed at how well King performed many of the instrumentals himself. As usual the vocals were spectacular. King would later put together a band to do his solo records and many of the records were very good, Abigail being the best. If you like King and want to hear his best solo stuff start with this record and then get Abigail you will be very happy you did as they are two of his best."
Dark metal by a great band

"King Diamond's 1986 debut album Fatal Portrait just plains rocks. It's dark metal at its finest. King Diamond sounds like a cross between Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Metallica. They are definitely influenced by these bands, as all bands are influenced by something out there. King Diamond (formerly of Mercyful Fate) has a wickedly high voice that fits the music perfectly and he has cited Robert Plant, Ian Gillan, Rob Halford, Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, and David Byron as his main influences.

My favorite songs on this album are "Halloween" and "The Candle".

If you want some really dark heavy metal for your listening enjoyment, listen to all this band has to offer. Their concept albums are awesome for the Halloween season and any time you want to immerse yourself into the dark world of heavy metal."
