CD Reviews

The Kinks have entered The Arena
PHILIP S WOLF | SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA. USA | 08/18/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"After years of kult korship by the kollected few, The Kinks in September 1979 were back on rise in the United States. This concert in Providence, Rhode Island, captures the band on a wave that did not crest until 1984.

After a decade of mis-steps and a wee bit of indulgence, Ray was ready to rock again, and Dave was unleashed as a guitar god. "One For The Road" is the proof. This 2 LP set & Time/Life Video release in 1980 was the begining of The Kinks, 2nd rise to the top. Punk was: 'punking-out.' The New Wave & the Young Romantics, well...sucked. And it was time to hear these great songs as played by the Masters and not The Pretenders or Van Halen.

The Hits are here: (Lola, You Really Got Me, Victoria, All Day & All of the Night). Album Gems are also included: (20th Century Man, Misfits and Celluliod Heroes). But it's the Band's playing that brings it all up a Notch. Ray's Acoustic Guitar has never sounded better, and what can you say about Brother Dave...Whew, He is The Show here...Power Chording and Blazing Lead Runs on his Gibson abound on "One For The Road". Dave Davies has never been given the credit he is Due as One of The Greatest Rock Guitar Players. He is an Volcanic Eruption !!!

I was Lucky enough to see this Great Band, Live in Concert in 1975, 1977,1979, 1983 & 1984. San Diego, Winterland, San Francisco,New York City, Norfolk & Richmond, Va. Those were Great Nights and now they are Great Memories. I still own that Beta Cassette from 1980 as well, and I have played that Video Dozens of times over the Years...

Long live The Kinks...FIVE STARS !!!"
THE BEST OF THE LIVE

"There are certain live albums that must be owned. They are..

1. KISS - ALIVE! Alive!

2. QUEEN - KILLERS

3. CHEAP TRICK - BUDOKAN

4. THE KINKS - ONE FOR THE ROAD

The order of these four are determined by which acts you perfer, but they all belong at or near the very top of the top of the list. ONE FOR THE ROAD was my introduction to THE KINKS when I was still but a teenager and it reamins for me one of the greatest live albums of all time. What determins a great live album? When the songs sound even better live than on the studio albums.

"But Rock and Roll is Forever yells Ray Davies in between tunes on this fantastic live set by one of the best bands of their own or any other era. The Kinks at their live best- not to be missed. If you weren't around for these guys you really need to check them out because they sound as relevant and topical as any music that came after them. Ray Davies is brilliant."
