These guys have come a long way since their days as Big Daddy Kinsey's Fabulous Sons. Now the sons have become a power trio and inhabit that gray area between blues and rock. On this album, their first for Alligator Records in a number of years, they continue to mature into a very tight unit; this is very evident on the vocal duet "Dead in Your Tracks." Several fine musicians sit in on many of the sides. Anthony Space does some gorgeous keyboard work, and "Mad Dog" Lester Davenport's tasteful harmonica solo on "Deep in a Dark Dungeon" is also worth a listen. Most of the titles are self-penned and for the most part are ably crafted. There are also several nice covers, such as a Hendrix-ish version of John Fogerty's "Rattlesnake Highway," and a funky rendition of Bob Seger's "Fire Down Below." It might be blues or it might not--either way, it is a nicely done album. --Lars Gandil

"Originally from Gary,Indiana, these three brothers are the sons of none other than Big Daddy Kinsey.1998's'Smoke and Steel'represents their return to the Alligator label...and blues big time.Great guitar work sometimes a la ZZ Top,urban topics-we're on the edge of the city no more,remember?-city boy's blues."

"The Kinsey Report is one of the great discoveries I have made in recent years and I am hoping that others discover them as well. smoke and Steel is a great cd. I love every song. The cd fuses the edges of funk, blues and rock in a way that is unique and pleasing. The brothers Kinsey are talented musicians, serving apprenticeship with their father, blues musician Big Daddy Kinsey, before going off on their own. Lead guitarist Donald Kinsey also played with Bob Marley while learning his trade.I love the dark minor key songs, they wrote, like When the Church Burned Down, Code of the Streets and Down in the Dungeon. It isn't a pleasant upbeat vision of the city which they evoke - it's Smoke and Steel. They also do great cover versions of Rattlesnake Highway by John Fogerty and Fire Down Below by Bob Seger.Kinsey Report are talented musicians who deserve a growing audience."
