Amazon.comSchulhoff, a Czech Jewish composer who died in the Holocaust, left behind a few recordings that show what an amazing pianist he was. The Variations on this disc is an early student work, solid but not as individual as the music to follow. The Little Round Dances, however, are filled with the spirit of jazz and the popular dance music that was Schulhoff's inspiration. The Sonata is a characteristic, large-scale piece showing Schulhoff at his best. None of this music is overly familiar, but Ulrich Urban plays it effectively. The disc shows several aspects of an under-appreciated major composer of the 20th century. --Leslie Gerber
