""Skip a beat and move with your body." With these simple words Kylie Minogue took an artistic step forward that alienated a huge body of fans, while pleasing a relative handful with her bravery and innovation. SLOW separated the men from the boys in more ways than one when it first appeared last winter. its minimal instrumentation portending the even more radical moves Bjork makes on her new instument-less CD MEDULLA.
But that's what Bjork is supposed to be--challenging, while Kylie has had a lesser mandate, she's just supposed to be kittenish and entertaining. When we heard the simple countermeasures of the electronic keyboards, and the rushed lyrics that she singspiels her way through to a dramatic "Slow down," we Kylie fans didn't know what we were hearing, many of us complained, there's no chorus and so forth. It just took awhile for the track to sink it, and once it does, it's there in your cortex forever."
