Callas in stunning form

"This was the first studio recording that Callas made and even though her second recording of Gioconda shows even deeper insights into the role there is surprisingly little difference between the two although 7 years seperates them, Callas penetrates the sad story of Gioconda like no other displaying such emotional turmoil with all the qualities that have rightly made her the greatest soprano,her voice is electric especially in the fourth act where she uses her chest voice to wonderful effect,her top notes too are spot on and her interperative powers defy belief,this is Callas at her finest and if you've not heard her in this opera yet I urge you do! Barbieri as Laura sings magnificantly too a worthy partner to Callas and its also a rare pleasure to hear the statuesque singing of Giulio Neri who unfortunately left few recordings of his wonderful dark bass,a true basso profondo, Silveri as Barnaba possesses a magnificent dark baritone voice and characterises the role menacingly,only the tenor Poggi disappoints not having the technique or quality of voice to sing in such illustrious company he lets this version down ,surely there were better tenors available in 1952! the orchestra too is no match for la scala and Votto seems to have improved by the second version but nevertheless this is a treasure of a recording."
