As if there isn't enough irony in the world, one of the world's most consistently inspired revivalists of (predominantly) American instrumental and surf rock continues to be Finland's own Laika and the Cosmonauts. Returning here after a multi-year recording hiatus, founders Mikko Lankinen (guitar) and Janne Haavisto (drums) and company ably prove that while their musical tastes still run to an early 60's musical pantheon that spans the Ventures, Tornadoes, and even a little Mondo Cane, they've kept their ears open to some refreshing contemporary influences, too. Purists may be jarred by the thrashing bass 'n' slashing power chords of "Rikki on the Loose" and "Mr. Melee," the sampled loops of "Harkoosh," and occasionally jazzy motifs (courtesy of keyboardist Matti Pinsiki) that are daringly Steely Dan-ish, especially in this context. But it's all delivered with an expansive spirit of adventure that crucially never loses its tasteful sense of history, even as it forcefully blows a few cobwebs from the twang-centric instrumental rock repertoire. --Jerry McCulley

CD Reviews

Candy for your ears!

"The long wait is over. After seven years of their previous studio album Laika & The Cosmonauts came up with a new masterpiece. On Local Warming their sound is little more refined than in Absurdistan. They have also moved even further from classic surf genre. Matti Pitsinki has added some new sounds to his keyboards and they have also used some exciting percussive samples. The melodies are hauntingly captivating. They are in an eerie way sad but optimistic, threatning but persuasive. There are a few instant hits but most of the songs really open after listened to a couple of times. For every Cosmonauts fan this cd is a must but I recommend it also for any fan of instrumental rock."
Great album

"this album is another one of the best cds i've gotten this year. it's extremely limiting to say this is a surf rock album. it's much more than that. it's actually closer to the likes of moe., the meat puppets, friends of dean martinez or the sadies than los straitjackets or the ventures. you could take any track from this cd and put it on a mix cd and play it at a party and everyone would wonder what it is because no one will have heard anything quite like it. it's not until you hear the whole album from start to finish that you really hear the surf influence. but that's a great way to listen to it because it flows really well. high speed americanized euro rock with a sense of humor."
Great music!

"This band is cool. They manage to create a unique vibe with this CD. As a guitarist, I can appreciate the challenge of keeping instrumental songs interesting...not a problem for this band! If you're in the mood for "something different", buy this CD."
