Album Description

Original music by a quartet consisting of 2 saxophones, bass and drums: Scott Colley, bass; Donny McCaslin, tenor; Dave Binney, alto and Jeff Hirshfield, drums. This is the debut CD by this New York group which has been performing and touring together since 1994. Lan Xang's members have an incredible rapport with each other, and their music is unlike anything you've heard from an ensemble of this instrumentation. They played to high critical acclaim at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September '98.

"Lan Xang as a group depeicts the ripe evolution of modern day jazz. The orchestration of the two saxophones, bass, and drums provides for soundscapes never heard before until now. They have with this one record opened up a new wave of jazz and inspiration to come. Typing does not do this recording justice! I was fortunate to see Donny, Dave, Kenny/Jeff, and Scott twice over the last few years, and to this day claim it has been the most influential series of concerts I have ever been a part of. You too can experience this life!"
