Synopsis

David Geffen gave up his day job to manage Laura Nyro after he heard these songs. Artists then knocked on his door begging to record them. But no one sang them sweeter than Nyro herself; not Blood, Sweat & Tears with "And When I Die," The Fifth Dimension with "Wedding Bell Blues," or even Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End." This is a remarkable collection of mature songs for anyone, much less the 20-year-old Brooklyn girl who penned them. Nyro, of course, would go on to make ever deeper, richer, sweeter soul-inflected music; but she would never be as shyly innocent or as patently joyful as on First Songs. --Michael Ruby

CD Reviews

Wonderful & sunny,different Nyro
Sasha | at sea...sailing somewhere | 04/11/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I know that Nyro herself didn't like this album, claimed producers made it all too pop against her will and used her youth to assert their authority against her lack of experience in the business but you know what - I like this way better than anything else in her discography.

For the start,it has beautiful breezy & sunny atmosphere, sort of Mamas-and-Papas hippie sound, relaxed and very late 1960s,Nyro voice is excellent and songs (for once) actually have beginning and end. They all are,in my opinion,first-class little pop gems that sound far better like this in original, than in covers that later others charted with.

(And what's with this covers by the way, seems like everybody else had hits with Nyro songs except Nyro herself - and when she finally charted, she charted with Carole King song - I remember knowing "Stoney End" from Barbra Streisand and than being completely blown away by Nyro original,it was one of those "ah,yes, this is the way it should sound" moments).

What I try to point here is this - Laura Nyro debut is by far the easiest, prettiest and radio-friendly music she has ever recorded but not because lady herself. Its the producers and arrangers who made it into finished product and shaped it into this, people in business who knew what they were doing and wanted singles, hits and radio airplay. They actually tailored her music and vocals into album of rare beauty and somehow molded young genius into pop format of 4 minutes singles.

Later, when Nyro started making money with her songs and other singers had hits with them, she was given freedom to do what she pleased and off she went into artistic-neverland where I couldn't follow her anymore.Yes,she had recorded handful of very bleak, dark and strange albums that some of my friends love but I hardly heard complete and never enjoyed as half as much as this one,her debut.

I am listening "Good Bye Joe" right now, with its haunting vocal chorus (multi-tracked young Nyro) and absolutely enjoying it,nothing she came up with later ever thrilled me as this album. So in bigger scheme of things,I shouldn't probably like this because it was not real Nyro but I do."
