"Ive had the pleasure of seeing Lee perform with Sugarman 3 and this man and this music is for real.
This music is not a gimmick. Nor is it like a cheesy 70's Blaxploitation soundtrack. It is not being created by 'geeks' trying to copy the sounds of the 60's and 70's for some kind of anorak trainspotting reason.
It is being created and listened to by people who are sick and tired of the sterile mass marketed soul-less dross that the music industry continues to spew forth nowadays. Lee Fields and the NYC collective of musicians is doing us a great service by creating sounds of such organic beauty and raw funkiness.
On this, Lee's best work to date, he tackles crime, poverty, love, relationships and drugs. It's not just about getting down like James Brown, the music's got something to say for a change. 'Problems' and 'I Dont Know Where I'm Going' are tour-de-forces of hard funk but the songs aren't all about having a good time and thats what makes them so good.
Lee Fields proves himself to be the most prolific and talented male vocalist in funk today and rightfully earns his place as Soul Brother number 2 after James Brown. But dont worry, he's no pastiche of JB, despite the grunts and screams. Lee's voice is as distinctive as it can be emotive and as rough as it can be smooth. The musicians cook up a storm and the conga and drums really burn. I cant wait for the new album.
Check out Sharon Jones new album, Naturally, if you dont already have it.
God bless Daptone Records, Desco Records, Soul Fire and Truth and Soul for all of your hard work and the legendary music youve brought to us in the last few years. Long may it continue!
